Totem Pole

On my recent trip up to Esalen, I fell in love with this totem pole that I had to have. The totem pole by artist Sally Russel spoke to me and I had it delivered a few weeks later. We have been enjoying the new addition as well as a revamp to the succulent garden, not to mention the beautiful weather! Don't forget we have a beautiful and quaint guest cottage that is available by the night, week, or month. Here is the LINK to the Casita de Colores. Water for the Horses

Last week I ran into a woman riding horses through Santa Barbara. As this is an unusual occurrence, I striked up conversation and got her story. Karin Hauenstein is riding from Lompoc to Studio City in California with her three horses in protest of commercial horse slaughter. She stops every 10 to 15 miles on her journey down to LA to raise awareness for the cause. Karin stopped by our house to water and graze the horses before they headed down State Street in Santa Barbara. Here are some photos of her and her horses: Coley, Glory and Smoke.

This year I went as a punk rocker for Halloween. We went to our friends, John and Star's Halloween party, and when the fortune teller cancelled last minute, I volunteered for the job! There was a line out the door of the fortune telling room as the other party-goers waited for my insight. I might have to pursue a new career in fortune telling one day because I was pretty good at it!

Yesterday I spent the day out in Ojai making citrus marmalade with my friend Fran Puccinelli. We made 50 jars and it turned out delicious! Homemade marmalade with grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime, and ginger.

This past weekend I volunteered for the Bread and Roses 2011 event benefiting The Fund for Santa Barbara. The FUND FOR SANTA BARBARA is a nonprofit community foundation dedicated to addressing the root causes of social, economic, environmental and political challenges in Santa Barbara County. I worked the auction area and the even was such a blast! Everyone had a great time and lots of money was raised for the cause. Caron Miller Collection donated a gorgeous OTT Mesh Embroidered topper in all black. Here are some photos of me working in the silent auction.

Tomorrow we head off to Yosemite to hike Half Dome! The girls and I will be climbing the 16.8 mile hike on Friday including the final bump of the hike shown in this picture. We will be hiking up 4,800 feet of elevation! But don't worry, if it is raining, we will not be going up that last bump.

Four days after we return, I am off to New York for the Gift Show!! Bring on the silly season - it's Christmas at Caron's!

Back in June, I attended a Girls Night Out benefiting Alpha Resource Center. It was an evening of dress up and play, make up and hair, and we were photographed in our new looks! Molly, our host, had an amazing collection of vintage hats, costumes, and jewelry. All aboard the Condor Express!

A few weeks ago, Brittany, Kat, Doug & I spent the day on the Condor Express - the whale watching tour boat out of the Santa Barbara Harbor. Brittany's boyfriend Matt is a deckhand on the boat so we got the special treatment! It was such a magical day!! We saw 3 types of dolphins, Dolls porpoises, a shark, and 2 grey whales - everything they usually see this time of year, all in one day. We had beautiful weather and a great crew! There was not a wave in sight, even past the Channel Islands. It was like we were cruising on a big lake. And we also got to see and go inside Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island which is one of the world's largest sea caves. Here are some pictures of our trip:

Uruguay, Here we come!!

Tomorrow morning I set off on my next horsey adventure - Uruguay! For 9 days we will be trotting and cantering through the gorgeous scenery. The Hidden Trails expedition will take us through as "We ride from the traditional cattle breeding region of the country to the Coast of "Rocha" where we will cross the "Bañados del Este" Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO recognized), filled with an enormously diverse bird population... and other wildlife like the endangered capybara, sea turtle, and the franca whale." We will also "Enjoy the thrill of fast paced riding along the firm, sandy beaches pf Uruguay and across the vast grasslands on well trained and responsive riding horses. Enjoy breaks for traditional barbecue lunches and picnics, then ride on each day, over sand dunes, through palm groves, beside inland lakes teeming with wild waterfowl and on to the old Portuguese fort or your beach side hotels to admire stunning sunsets. Dolphins feeding in the beautiful bays, black-necked swans gliding across the lagoons, chattering parrots flying over, capybaras wading in the reeds - these are all things you can expect to find on a typical week in this paradise. Incredibly friendly locals and skilled gauchos may accompany us and talk of their unique lives and their traditions." Sounds like a blast!

Caron & Brittany are headed to two more tradeshows next week to finish out the season. First is Las Vegas for the Womens Wear in Nevada show at the Rio Hotel. The show is February 14-17 and we will be exhibiting in Booth #142.

Next, Caron flies to Philly for the Buyers Market of American Craft show. The show is February 18-21 and Caron will be exhibiting in Booth #1830-31.

We can't wait for these shows and we hope to have an awesome turnout. Hopefully we will see you in the next couple weeks!

As the crazy weather strikes again, my flight to NYC for the New York International Gift Fair has been canceled. 18 inches of snow on the runway will do it, which is weird to imagine as we are sitting here in Santa Barbara with 75 degree weather! Luckily, I am on a flight tomorrow morning bright and early at 6:30 am to the big apple. I will be wearing my superwoman costume as I attempt to fly in and set up all in one day! My mom is also on a new flight tomorrow and we will be getting there around the same time. Say a little prayer to the weather gods for us! But I'm not going to let a little snow get me down. It all worked out and now I am going to the opening gala of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival tonight! NY Gift is going to be an awesome show and I am excited to see all of you that can make it!

Here is my friend Izzie that I met on my last horsey trip to South Africa. She is wearing her T-Knit Headband on the top of Ben Macdui, the second highest mountain in the UK. She says, "It is great when its too warm for a hat but need ears covered and keeps my hair out of my eyes." Very true! So cool to see these headbands pop up in different places around the world!

On our trip to Aspen, I stopped by a couple of our stores to peek in and say hello! First we saw Dancing Colours Studio in Carbondale, CO. The Ruffle Knits, T-Knits, and Velvets looked fab!

Next we went to our newest store Two Old Hippies in Aspen. This cute and funky store was representing Caron Miller with some Faux Fur, velvets, and knit scarves.

This year's theme for the Artizans Ball was "Magical Mystery Tour...from Abbey Road to India." The event was colored by Beatles music and décor, along with an auction of original paintings, gift baskets, getaways, and parties to benefit Sarah House. The ball was on Saturday at the Rockwood Woman's Club and it was such a great event!! Everyone was dressed in their Beatles and hippie attire and we had so much fun! Rosey, Ginger, Muffy, and Limey made an appearance last week for Santa Barbara's monthly Bike Moves! It was the Bikemare Before Christmas and everyone was dressed up and in costume as we rode up and down State Street playing Christmas music and ringing bells! State Street was beautifully decorated with lights and trees and people cheering us on as we rode by. Bootsie also looked extremely cute with her black corduroy and red flannel coat strapped into her milk carton on the back of Doug's bike. Brittany and her friends joined in the festivities and a fun time was had by all!

This week we are getting ready and setting up for Saturday's annual Art Walk Trunkshow which benefits the Art Walk for Kids/Adults. This local organization is an outreach program with the mission of focusing on benefiting special needs, autistic, developmentally disabled, at risk, youth and adults in their positive environments through a specialized curriculum of art education. All framed artwork by these amazing artists will be on sale for $99. We will also have Caron Miller accessories, Helen Heising Designs - silver jewelry, Sally Terrell beaded jewelry, URU one-of-a-kind clothing, Grapeseed Company spa and skincare products, & Lola Tinney's hand-made cards.

I'm off on another adventure!

I'm leaving tonight for another trip of a lifetime! This time Bill Otto and I are off to South Africa and Botswana on a giddy up adventure. This is an unforgettable riding adventure, combining four days on a private game reserve in South Africa’s Waterberg Mountains. From there, we travel north across the border into Botswana for four nights on the Mashatu Reserve. We will be out on safari and riding alongside the rhinos, hippos, buffalo, giraffes, ostrich, zebras, hyenas, and more! But don't worry, our guide is fully equipped with a shotgun in case any of the kitties get too close! Then we trek to Zimbabwe where we will be riding elephants and hiking around Victoria Falls. Wish me luck and I'll be back in two weeks with some amazing pictures to share!

Happy Solstice everyone!! Yesterday marked the first day of summer and that means we are gearing up for our annual Solstice Party! Botswana inspired Safari Collection

In October I will be embarking on my next giddy up adventure: Botswana! This horseback trip is a classic point-to-point safari covering approximately 120 miles in the vast Mashatu Game Reserve in the Tuli Block of south eastern Botswana. Mashatu is a privately owned wildlife sanctuary of 75,000 acres, situated at the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, in the remote and largely undiscovered Northern Tuli Region. This is an area of great bio-diversity, magnificent vistas, ancient civilizations and dramatic rock formations bordered by the great Limpopo River in the south.

We will be running with a blaze (a herd of zebras) and other wildlife. At the end of the trip we will be riding elephants for 4 days through Victoria Falls. I can't wait!!!
